On Sunday, October 23, 2011, the law enforcement officers of Albany, New York, made a startling decision to IGNORE the requests of their mayor and governor.

Finally, sanity prevails.

With protesters acting peacefully, local and state police agreed that low level arrests could cause a riot, so they decided instead to defy Cuomo and Jennings.
“We don’t have those resources, and these people were not causing trouble,” a state official said. “The bottom line is the police know policing, not the governor and not the mayor.”

Inspiration for Writers

I've just begun writing again, a welcomed challenge that I seem to go through in phases. I have found some interesting blogs that would be inspirational, instructional, and just plain good reading for writers or wannabe writers. Hopefully I'll visit them often and persevere to a finished project this time.

A friend and I are collaborating on a project right now and I have high hopes for it. Of course, I always have high hopes, I just don't have a high rate of completion (grin).

Anyone who wants to write, probably can. It just takes dedication to complete a project. With word processors that not only check your spelling, but also alert you to grammatical errors, there is no excuse to not attempt to write that one proverbial book that apparently lies within each of us (so they say).

Starting is easy.

I have started so many stories it boggles my mind. Finishing them, that's the hard part. I now realize that I am going about it the wrong way - you know what they say, doing something over and over again even though it isn't working, is the definition of insanity. Of course, I paraphrased that concept.

I'm gathering some writer info into a blog post for future reference, and also so others might benefit from them.

I used StumbleUpon to find these sites referring to writing, so feel free to friend me over there. I also found a cool site that gives you one word and then allows 60 seconds for you to write about it. It's a great little exercise. Join me there too, they have a great community and we can be friends and share our one word blurbs. My username is "bloglady" on both of these sites.

Halloween is around the corner and October in general is a month when strange happenings occur. I hear many tales of unexplained phenomena such as lights going on and off, knocks on the door when no one is there and sometimes just a "feeling" that someone is watching you.

Is there any particular reason that spirits are more active in October? None that I can think of, except that it has been believed to be this way for centuries.

However, those who know more about the cosmos, the star alignments and geomagnetic pulls may have some valid reasons why October is the bewitching month.

Ghostly superstitions and beliefs exist in all cultures, and today I found a nice image that shows ways to ghost proof your home. The traditions come from many different cultures and are easy to do, except for the Kaballah thing.

Star Jones Fired

Celebrity Apprentice is one of my favorite shows. It's fascinating to see how such famous and influential people deal with each other during their ambitious race to the "WINNER" proclamation of Donald Trump.

Sunday night's show was full of entertainment as usual. At one point, I began to wonder if Meatloaf was channeling Gary Bussey, but it turned out okay.

Later, when Meatloaf and Star Jones got into it, I became less of a fan of Star Jones and I wasn't a huge fan to begin with. While she is a woman of great accomplishments, she is also the first person to tell you about them. It was obvious that she was throwing Meatloaf under the bus from the beginning of that episode.

But why?

At first, I thought it was a deliberate act to try to get rid of him, but as she refused to continue her debate with him when it became uncomfortable - as the truth usually is - I began to wonder if there was a deeper psychological reason for her actions.

Star has taken the bull by the horns performing her "branding" tasks with little or no input from others on the team - until Meatloaf.

Why did she suddenly stop?

Perhaps she has some emotional scars that cause her to shutdown in the presence of influential men. Possibly someone in authority caused her a lot of pain in her childhood.

Whatever the reason, Star Jones was fired, mostly because several people had complained of her manipulation and back-stabbing tactics, which no good leader should have.

If you haven't watched the show, this is a great season to watch, even though it's almost over. I think it would be a great tool for anyone wanting to learn how the rich and famous (and powerful) conduct themselves in business matters.

It's definitely a hoot if you have an interest in psychology.

In Israel, they have concluded after a study that FaceBook contributes to eating disorders among their teen girls.

Really?

Forget about the magazines, television shows, commercials, billboards, movies and rock stars.... it's all FaceBook's fault.

Growing up in the 60s and experiencing the assassins of JFK, Robert Kennedy and MLK, obviously had an impact on my view of religion, politics and the world in general. This has become more obvious to me in light of the recent shooting in Tucson, which brought back sad, depressing memories. The lack of respect for the public offices is abominable. You can dislike the politics, and even the politician, but we must get back to a place where we can at least recognize and respect their dedication to service of the community and nation.

We seem to be experiencing a time of emotional upheavals on all levels. The spiritually minded are working more diligently to become more spiritual, which is what we truly are -- spiritual beings learning to live as humans, while most of the the religious right are fighting louder than ever to STOP spreading love creating a society where it's every one for him/herself, and the discontented and lost souls of this world are stepping into insanity and committing unfathomable acts of violence, hatred and cruelty.

Perhaps it has always been this way, we just weren't as aware because of the lack of media coverage. Today, the Internet keeps us updated of worldly events so quickly that our ancestors would be dizzy with excitement if they could but have a glimpse of this technology that we sometimes take for granted.

Along with the news of violence, we also have the opportunity to learn of so many things, such as medical research and scholarly reports on ancient texts, archaeology and the entire universe.

Universe - (definition) All matter and energy, including the earth, the galaxies, and the contents of intergalactic space, regarded as a whole.

So, we are all one. We should be singing the same verse in harmony with our counterparts.

As long as the spiritual seek to unite in their intentions and prayers for this wholeness of our planet, there is hope.

New Computer

It finally happened.

After 10 years, my old faithful computer died.

So I now have a nice new pc with so much ram that I am amazed at all the cool multi-tasking I can do.

I’ve just downloaded Live Writer to make blogging easier… this is my first post using it.

Windows 7 seems fine so far. I’ve only had it a few days, so time will tell.

My favorite item is the monitor which is large enough to have the google side bar which has a calendar, moon cycle, and today’s date, as well as the weather and a search box… which doesn’t interfere with my browsing or anything else.

I’ve even added a little to-do list so I don’t forget those annoying things that must get done but seem to get put off til tomorrow.

Since I’m back in school now (yes, at my age), I’m especially happy to have a computer that can handle projects for my daughter and myself.

Is it just me, or does anyone else have concern over a General who thinks of himself so highly that he is offended when the Commander in Chief does not acknowledge his presence?

This is not the type of ego that will serve us well as a nation, regardless of which party you "cling" to.

I hope you will join me as I pray for President Obama to make the right decision regarding McChrystal's letter of resignation.

Hopefully, the Pentagon is not well represented by him. I shudder to think that our highest ranking military officials have the mentality of a high school bully.

Other interesting facts about McChrystal...

He runs 7 to 8 miles a day, eats one meal, and sleeps for four hours a night.

Turn Plastic Soda Bottles into Luminaries

In celebration of Earth Day, I thought it would be nice to include a crafty way of recycling all of those 2 liter soda bottles...

(NC)—Instead of throwing away plastic soda bottles, repurpose them to make luminaries for all kinds of occasions, from glittery summer gatherings to Halloween socials. To do so:

Peel the labels from empty plastic soda bottles. Use adhesive remover and a paper towel to remove any residue. Wash the soda bottles thoroughly and let them dry completely. Using a utility knife or scissors, carefully cut off top of each bottle. But how to start the first cut? Yahoo Answers “best answer” recommends heating a screwdriver on the gas and melting a hole which you then cut with a pair of good scissors.

Next, cut a half-circle out of the back, near the bottom. (This will make it easier to add the sand and the candle later.)

Draw desired shapes on the sticky-backed, removable adhesive paper and cut them out. Adhere the shapes to the soda bottles, being careful to firmly seal edges with fingernail. Cover your work area with newspaper. Spray the soda bottles with Krylon Fusion for Plastic.

After 24 hours, carefully peel off the removable shapes. (The spray paint will be dry to touch after 15 minutes but should be allowed to cure for at least 24 hours before the luminaries are put into service.) Add sand to the base for weight and insert a candle into each luminary. Light and enjoy.

Materials

Krylon Fusion for Plastic Spray Paint available in select colours at Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Rona, Reno Depot, Wal-Mart, Kent and many other hardware and home centre stores.

Empty plastic soda bottles from your pantry

Con-Tact Paper or any sticky-backed adhesive paper, available at most craft stores

Scissors and/or a utility knife

Screwdriver

Adhesive remover

Candles

Sand

Paper towels

Drop cloths or newspaper

Rubber Gloves (optional)

Other ideas for reusing plastic soda bottles:

Make a potpourri holder. Cut off the bottom of the bottle, spray paint it, put it in the potpourri and cover the opening with lace and ribbon.

Make a “motion ocean.” Fill the bottle with half water, half oil. Add food colouring, glitter and turn. It's great for a child's show-and-tell day.

Make ice-packs for coolers or sore muscles. Fill bottles about two-thirds full and freeze. The plastic packs are ideal for placing in coolers and lunch boxes, and handy for emergency use when an ice-pack is needed.

I have a friend who needs health insurance badly but cannot afford the premiums, so I have been keeping up with the developments on her behalf.

Today, The Washington Post posted a "frequently asked questions" section on the new health care / insurance reform bill as it stands now.

Case in point...

-- My family has income of about $60,000, but we haven't been able to afford health insurance. Can we get it now? You might be eligible for government subsidies to help you pay for private insurance that will be sold in the health exchanges that will begin operation in 2014. Premium subsidies will be available for families with incomes from $29,327 to $88,000. But there's no help until then.

Executive Order on Abortion

What an interesting turn things have taken today regarding the debates on health care reform. The President has offered to issue an Executive Order restricting abortion, but many Republicans are now stating "live" on TV, that Executive Orders are useless.

Really? NO!

Executive orders do have the full force of law AND, the courts have overturned only two executive orders.

I am so tired of the lies.

Speaking of abortion, am I the only one who sees the irony of this?

How can you claim to honor the sanctity of life by opposing abortion, when you allow thousands of people who are already walking on this earth, to suffer and die - needlessly?

Please explain.

Furthermore, what type of future are we creating by insisting that those unwanted children continue to be born?

Who will pay for their needs?

Who or what type of adult Americans will they become once they have discovered the truth of their birth?

Who can have a healthy self-esteem once they know that they were not loved and not wanted by the very people who brought them into this world?

Hmmm.

Most of the working class struggling to decide between an insurance premium or a light bill, gave up the land-line telephone in favor of a cellphone years ago.

Therefore, most of the polled public that is cited by the media, mostly on FOX, is not representative of the general public at large, who would be helped greatly by the health reform bill.

Telephone polls are no longer a viable method of gauging public opinion.

My Only True Vice Was Smoking

If you know me well, you know these things about me...

I don't drink
I don't do drugs
I don't gamble
I don't swear
I don't sleep around
I don't even buy lottery tickets

My only true vice has been smoking cigarettes.
And now I don't do that.

I have been without a cigarette for a whole week.

You may think that isn't long enough for me to say that I have truly quit, but I think it's a fair statement considering the circumstances.

How did I quit?

Our wonderful government decided to add a flame retardant to the cigarette papers, and I am allergic to it.

How nice of them.

I'm betting that more than 99% of smokers have NOT caused any forest fires because if they had, there would be fires constantly burning ALL of the time all over this land and we would not be able to keep them down.

So, let's insert an ingredient that is toxic and deadly to the smoker, so we can stop all of those non-existent fires. Some say the ingredient is a carpet glue. Others say it is sodium silicate, which can cause many reactions.

Whatever it is, it causes my lips to swell and tingle, and has taken all of the pleasure out of my 4 or 5 cigarettes a day.

I loved my cigarettes.
I loved smoking.
I miss it.

It has also burned a few holes in my coat. You see, I go outside to smoke and in the winter that means wearing your coat. This new fire safe cigarette just causes more ashes to burn off and float onto your clothing, leaving holes.

I can think of so many things that are so much more important than spending the research money and the time on fire proofing cigarettes... Let's see, we have the homeless, the hungry, the drug addicts, those dying of cancer (including those with lung cancer who never smoked), the paralyzed from spinal cord injuries, those dying with Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's and a plethora of other deadly diseases...

I don't ask for much, but honestly, I do not understand these attacks on smokers! I don't advocate allowing smokers to smoke just anywhere... I smoke(d) on my own property all by myself, not hurting another single soul.

I guess it will take another 20 to 30 years to realize that the true culprit of most forms of lung disease is in the air... put there by car fumes, industrial pollutants, etc.

Meanwhile,

Thank God our government decided to control all of those fires started by cigarette smokers.

Now I guess I'm almost perfect.

Free Speech for People or Groups

Should free speech, as it applies to campaign advertising and funding, be for people, or for groups and associations of people, which would include organizations and corporations?

Apparently, 5 justices of our Supreme Court believe that it should include groups and not just individuals.

However, how can they justify the fact that many of "we the people" are without associations of any kind, and therefore are not justly included in this particular ruling?

This new ruling allows an individual to be represented by many different voices, via the groups, corporations and associations they belong to and contribute to. You can own part of a large corporation and make your preferences known by sponsoring full page expensive ads to promote your candidate, AND you could also be a member of a non-profit organization that is doing the same thing, AND, as an individual you could also contribute to the campaign itself.

That gives you THREE voices instead of one.

This is just plain wrong.

It is not shocking to learn that many politicians would argue that the money reaches the candidates and their campaigns whether we know of it or not, but let us at least take every precaution to make it as difficult as possible for big businesses to influence the lawmaking process.

Why should we make it easy for them?

The 5-4 ruling reverses century-old limitations on corporate money in federal elections by prominently allowing businesses and labor unions to spend — as much as they want — directly in favor of or against candidates on TV or in literature, so long as the action is independent of the candidate and campaign.

Justice John Paul Stevens said in his dissent, "The court's ruling threatens to undermine the integrity of elected institutions around the nation." Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen G. Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor joined him.

Wakefield - Autism - Lancet

I've read many articles over the years which referred to Wakefield's research linking Autism to MMR Vaccinations. They alarmed me, as they did many parents.

I did have my child vaccinated in spite of the research, but I did not do it according to schedule. I waited much longer before I began the series of childhood/infant vaccinations, and then I waited longer between vaccinations. I don't know if it had any effect at all, except that it made me feel better as a parent.

What I did NOT know is that the Lancet published this research knowing that only a dozen or so kids were in the study. Why in the world would such a study be published and allowed to frighten so many parents, when it was obviously not widespread enough to matter, no matter what the results?

These are the types of questions we need to be addressing as a society.

Research conducted among such small groups should only lead to further research.

The media should report on it, but they should NOT neglect to inform us of such pertinent details as the number of subjects studied. This information is needed if we are to have an accurate portrayal of the findings.

Andrew Wakefield / Autism Research

I survived

A new decade is finally here and hopefully the world will be a much brighter and safer place over the next few years. Sometimes I just like to write my "stuff" and get it off my chest, and that is what I have done below. It feels good to look back and see what changes have taken place in 10 short years.

I find myself saying "I survived."

I am also grateful for all of the many blessings I have had and the lessons I have learned, not to mention the spiritual growth that took place because of the journey.

These events include only those which directly concerned myself and my children, and do not include those of siblings, nephews, nieces and dear friends whom have also had more than their fair share of traumatic events over the past decade.

Here are the most prominent events of my life over the past ten years.

1) My first grandchild, a beautiful boy, was born in 2000.

2) His Mother, my oldest daughter, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, also in 2000, and after two surgeries and radio-active iodine therapy, she is cancer free.

3) 9-11-2001, which of course affected all of us.

4) My Father passed away after 10 years of suffering from Alzheimer's in 12/2001.

5) My Mother passed away 7 weeks later in February of 2002, after a sudden illness and a 6 week stay in the hospital. My little girl was only 10 at the time, and was with us when she died. Her beloved dog was stolen while we were away, taking care of my Mother. Two of life's lessons she had to learn at the same time - death - and that people are cruel and steal your pets so they can resell them. We were told that someone stopped and took her away in a car, so we know she was stolen.

The next couple of years were rough, with much grieving to get through. During this time I stopped homeschooling my daughter and put her in school to hopefully give her a break from my melancholy.

AND THEN...

6) My husband suddenly walked out on us after 15 years of marriage and after spending the money my parents left me. My daughter and I were in shock. He left in January of 2004. It was a very tough time for a 12 year old girl who had just lost both of her grandparents.

7) The stress and grief left me with high blood pressure and some heart problems which were diagnosed in April of 2004.

8) My youngest daughter and I have moved 3 times since the divorce, the latest of which took us halfway across the country in August of 2009. We finally feel like we have a new start, and so far, we are happy with the move, even though finances are tight.

9) I proudly watched as my oldest daughter graduated as an RN in 2008, and my youngest graduated high school in 2009 and began college.

10) I have survived all that life has given me, the good and the bad, by the grace of God and the help of family and friends, which gives me hope and faith that God will always provide and will always walk with us through the fires and continue to take us to the mountain tops where the air is clear and life is good.

I was checking the news on CNN.com and saw the top 10 deals for Black Friday. I don't shop on Black Friday, and haven't done so in over 15 years.

They also have a poll asking how much people will spend on black Friday, with the lowest dollar amount being $0.

Amazingly, 52% of CNN's readers (online) will not spend one red cent the day after Thanksgiving, which begs the question, who does choose this day to shop? What type of people are willing to literally fight for a spot in the checkout line to save a few bucks?

I'm a thrifty shopper, but the idea of being in a mob does not entice me, even if they're giving merchandise away.

By the way, if you are shopping tomorrow, Target has a great deal on an LCD 32 inch HDTV for only $246, which is half price.

Galileo's Fingers Found

One of my favorite quotes by Galileo is...

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.

In ancient times, parts of bodies were kept as relics and were believed to hold special powers, especially those of the martyred saints.

This is how Galileo's fingers came to be amputated after his death. The fingers were cut off 300 years ago, and disappeared over 100 years ago. They were the fingers that would have held his pen.

Galileo's fingers have been missing for many years, but suddenly showed up at an auction and now will be in a museum in Florence, Italy, according to museum director Paolo Galluzzi. There is also some DNA testing that will be done.

"(Galileo) was persecuted by the Catholic Church for advocating the theory that the earth circles the sun, rather than the other way around. The Inquisition forced him to recant, and jailed him in 1634."

There truly is nothing new under the sun, especially when it comes to how we treat people with new and "strange" ideas. Right?

Journalism We Can Trust

Journalism we can trust, does it still exist?

How do we know if we can trust a reporter?

Simple.

If you can tell how the reporter "feels" about something, then he/she has failed to be a true reporter, which is an objective reporter, and therefore you can't trust them.

Journalism once was about reporting "just the facts, ma'am."

Sadly, no matter which television news channel you support by your viewing minutes or hours, none of them can be trusted all of the time.

Most of the reporters are entertainers, not journalists.

Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glen Beck are all being paid to stir up controversy, not report on the news.

Same thing goes for the people over at the other news channels, but I don't know their names, so obviously they are not as good at it as the ones I've mentioned.

The only reporters I follow with any sense of the possibility of true reporting are John King and Anderson Cooper at CNN. I also enjoy Charlie Gibson on ABC news, most of the time.

Why Must we Have War?

Someone much older and wiser than myself asked this question today, "Why must we have war?"

My immediate response was, "How can we not?"

If you were raised on the Bible, you know that strife and murder entered into the picture with Cain and Abel. That was a very long time ago.

What was the cause? Jealousy. Or power. I call it pure envy.

We must have war to protect the freedom of the people inhabiting the world.

If we, as a nation, decided to stop participating in wars for, let's say, 10 years, what would happen? Suppose that no matter what, we would flat out refuse to fight or take police or military action outside of our homeland for the next ten years.

What would have happened if we had not joined the fight against Hitler?

It is my belief that if America refuses to "get involved," then we are literally opening the door for future dictators, tyrants and maniacs to "spread their wings."

Eventually, they would become so powerful that we would not be able to stop them.

Thank God for our brave military men and women who protect our freedom!

May they survive the circus!

As a web designer and hosting provider, I have often "tried" to explain where a website and other online date is stored and how it is accessed.

Rarely have I been able to convey the concept properly.

It was simple enough to explain a domain name by comparing it to a street address. Explaining exactly where the website data is stored and how it is accessed is quite another thing altogether.

Once, I was wrongly accused of all kinds of fraudulent activity, simply because my client was able to look up the information on their domain at another domain registrar's website. I was never able to make them understand that anyone can look up who owns a domain name - and so I lost the client. No problem. Good riddance.

First time home buyers tax credit

There's so much information and mis-information going around about the first time buyer's house tax credit, that I thought I would list the facts, as they stand right now.

Currently, the tax credit is for first time home buyers.

The purchased home must be closed on between January 1, 2009 and December 1, 2009.

(A new bill is being proposed that would extend the deadline until April of 2010).

Now, to take advantage of the FULL $8,000 house credit:

The home buyer must have an adjusted gross income of less than $75,000 or $150,000 for married couples filing jointly.
The home must have been purchased for less than $800,000.
The home must be your principal or primary residence.
The home cannot be purchased from an ancestor, descendant or spouse.
The tax credit is only for purchased homes, not homes you intend to purchase at a later date.
You claim the tax credit on your federal income tax return. Specifically, home buyers should complete IRS Form 5405 to determine their tax credit amount, and then claim this amount on line 67 of the 1040 income tax form for 2009 returns (line 69 of the 1040 income tax form for 2008 returns).

Rights in America

Every time they start to take away one of our rights here in America... they start with what seems to be a "small" thing. This "small" thing promises to make life better for everyone.

Example 1 : Car insurance - We are forced to buy car insurance to take care of our car and anyone else's car that we might damage (I have never been in wreck and I'm 55 yrs old). This forced automobile insurance has cost me a small fortune - and I have never used it - thank God.

The forced auto insurance was about protecting money and property.

Why weren't we outraged over that?

Example 2 : Tobacco Use - Everyone has been happy that most places are now tobacco free. This at least had to do with protecting our health. But now, at least in some areas, they are talking about making it illegal to smoke outside on your own property.

This is taking things too far.

What's next?

Forced health insurance. Pay it (if you can afford it, and "they" will decide who can afford it), or pay fines for not having health insurance.

Bit by bit, our rights are being taken away.

I'm all for controlling health care costs, because I believe as an American citizen we should ALL have access to health care. Why not create more not-for-profit health clinics for those who have no insurance?

Why not regulate the health care system and stop them from price gouging?

Why should those in the health care industry be able to charge whatever price they want for equipment and services?

Health care is a basic need and should be a basic right. It should not be a way to make millions off the backs of those who are sick.

I believe there should be a public government regulated health care option for health care, just as there is for education. If you can afford your own private health insurance and specialist, then by all means take advantage of it just as you do when you send your children to private schools.

Personally, I'm tired of anyone in America being forced to pay for things they can't afford, and may not need.

And that's my rant for this Monday!

Jane Doe in NY

Jane Doe is alive, but has no memory. She was found on October 9th, and still no one has shown up to claim her as a relative.

Very strange.

I can't help but wonder if she might have run away with someone a couple of years ago who later deserted her, and then maybe some awful things happened to her. The kinds of things that caused her mind to "freeze" and protect her from the memories.

Women pay more for private health insurance

This is an ongoing problem in the US... women consistently have to pay more for private health insurance. Guess it's still a man's world after all.

We're not asking for special treatment, just equal treatment.

Women pay 30-40% more on the private insurance market as men. Common pregnancy and c-sections are considered "pre-existing conditions." And in some states, insurers can even deny coverage to victims of domestic violence.The bills before Congress will guarantee, once and for all, that women are treated fairly and equitably by insurers.

Let's call for an end to discrimination against women by health insurance companies.

Church Hypocrisy

We visited another new church this morning. All the churches that we've visited are quite large, offering at least 2 Sunday morning services each week. This one offered 3 and we went to the last one, which started at 11 am. We heard that this one had an active college group, which is what we are looking for. My daughter has not lost her interest in church activities just because she graduated high school and is now attending college. I am amazed at the lack of support this age group receives from most churches - which is nada.

We had to drive by two locations to find the church, because the internet had two addresses. I guess they have changed locations recently. So we were late, but we could hear the music and we walked in and sat near the back.

I was quite impressed by the number of ministries they are involved in. Apparently, this was a Sunday of "recruitment" for volunteers for their many programs and we heard about each one of them. They participate in many local ministries and also provide international ministry opportunities. This is very important to me, I believe we MUST follow the teachings of Jesus and help the homeless and the poor, if we are to truly consider ourselves Christians.

The pastor was young and charismatic, and full of life... and even though I knew the text and had studied it myself, I was glad to see that he actually "studied" the scriptures and was able to offer his listeners a more complete understanding of the customs of the time, which explains why certain words and phrases are used. Without this knowledge, it is impossible to fully comprehend the messages of the scriptures.

I was pleased again, when I heard the pastor say NOT to give a tithe or offering if you could not give it gladly.

So far, so good.

Then it happened.

The hypocrisy.

There were tables set up outside for people to find out more information and sign up to help with the many wonderful ministries provided to the community by this church. The side doors were opened and the left side of the auditorium was urged to go out while the rest of the church was to gather in small groups of six or seven to pray for the community.

Well, it was our first Sunday and so we didn't really feel comfortable "gathering" with a small group, nor were we ready to commit to a project. Plus, we don't actually live in that community, we traveled 15 miles to attend this church.

We just wanted to fill out the visitor card (for my daughter) and turn it in. The bulletin, or program, said to turn it in at the front office on your way out. So, we headed for the front door, which was also the way we entered.

We were stopped and told we had to exit by the side doors today, where the tables were set up. WHAT??? You've got to be kidding me, I thought. This pastor, who just said he didn't want the tithes of anyone who couldn't give gladly, now wants to "force" the congregation to exit, one third at a time, where they will have to walk by the ministry tables. Hmmm.

Hypocrisy means that you profess a certain set of beliefs, while not actually living by those beliefs.

I guess they want you to sign up to volunteer, whether you mean it or not. If they're lucky enough that the "coaxed" souls who sign up actually show up, then I guess it doesn't matter whether or not they do THAT joyfully or gladly.

Hypocrisy is alive and well all over the place.

Meanwhile, we got turned around because we had never been there before, and were forced to exit into an area that was surrounded by buildings and parking lots. Finally, I went back to the front of the building so I could figure out where we parked.

Not a good experience.

They actually did one more thing that I thought was very good. When the gentleman touched my shoulder to instruct me to exit on the side of the building, a lady overheard me explaining to him that I needed to turn in the visitor card. She came up and welcomed us and even gave us a gift bag with more information about the church and their mission. It even included a little jar of preserves!

Now THAT shows that you welcome visitors and new members!

Can't wait to see how my daughter likes the college class.

Final decision on this church? Pending further deliberation.

Health Reform Facts

The health reform plan that the senate panel has approved for presentation to the full house and senate is not as bad as many people would have us believe.

In fact, I think it's the best plan so far.

I am tired of so many people telling me what it's going to do, which is basically a worst possible nightmare scenario, so here are a few of the facts as listed on CNN.

This healthcare reform bill would:

subsidize insurance for poorer Americans
establish nonprofit health care cooperatives (I assume this would be reduced fee clinics)
cap annual out-of-pocket expenses
prevent insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions
create health insurance exchanges to make it easier for small groups and individuals to purchase coverage
impose a new tax on high-end health care policies known as "Cadillac" plans
impose fees on drug and insurance companies, medical device manufacturers and other industries tied to the health care sector
require those who can afford it to purchase their health insurance or face fines
NOT include a government-run public health insurance option

The biggest problem with this plan, so far, is that it would decrease the funding for Medicare, which is why so many are upset. However, this plan will be discussed and modified before a final vote is taken.

Snowe indicated she has concerns with several aspects of the bill, but didn't want to see the reform process derailed.

"Is this bill all that I would want? Far from it," she said. "Is it all that it can be? No. But when history calls, history calls. And I happen to think that the consequences of inaction dictate the urgency of Congress [taking] every opportunity to demonstrate its capacity to solve the monumental issues of our time."

Swine Flu

This first part is an update on swine flu from the post I did yesterday. According to "some" experts, NO flu vaccines work anyway, so if you don't usually take the flu vaccine, you probably have nothing to worry about.

Here's part of the story:

If vaccines really worked to save lives, then the more people you vaccinate, the lower death rates you should see, right? But that's not the case. Back in 1989, only 15 percent of over-65 people got vaccinated against the flu. But today, thanks to the big vaccine push, over 65 percent are vaccinated. And yet, amazingly, death rates among the elderly have not gone down during the flu season. In fact, they've gone up!

Yesterday's post on Swine Flu:

My daughter and I received word that her great aunt passed away last Friday, from Swine Flu.

This is the first person I actually know to have died from it. My grandson has already had it, and a great-niece has had it, and thank God both of them recovered.

According to many professionals, there is no reason to fear the vaccination.

"The H1N1 vaccine is made in exactly the same way, using the same material, the same companies, the same process as the seasonal flu vaccine we make every single year and give to tens and tens of millions of people," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The problems with the vaccine of 1976 should not be a concern today. Technology and technique has improved. The only problems so far are mild and rare.

But, about 40% of Americans are still NOT planning to get the vaccine.

I'm one of them, but I never have taken a flu shot.

A New Life

It's been a week of rest, work and blessings as we got settled into our new apartment. My daughter and I took off from SC and moved to Arizona with only what would fit inside our SUV... call us crazy... lots of people did.

I actually agreed that it was a pretty unusual thing to do, but I was also very excited to be on a new adventure at this time in my life. I feel blessed that my daughter wanted me to join her on this quest.

We lived in a motel for a little over 3 weeks, which depleted our money terribly. Finding a place to live was much more of a chore than I had anticipated. But, finally, we found a place and moved our clothes, dishes, tv and computer into it.

That's when we discovered that it is not at all unusual for people to just leave all of their belongings behind and start anew somewhere else. The manager here said it happens all the time. Maybe it's unique to Arizona, I don't know. It's a little disappointing in one way, and a relief in another way, to find out that what we did is not at all unusual.

I have learned that people are nice, everywhere. There are always nice people to balance out the bad ones. The manager at our complex loaned us a bed on the first night, and the next day a guy living in the complex gave us another bed because he had just purchased a new one. Then last night, a new friend offered us a desk for the computer, so I can finally get up off the floor.

Finding a job hasn't been easy though. I've applied and sent out resumes and - well - nothing. It's not easy for a 55 year old woman to find work apparently, no matter what her resume looks like. BUT, my daughter who is attending college here, finally got a call last week and has a job!! YAY!!

The move has been good for me. I find myself excited to blog again, after a 3 month dry spell. But say a prayer for me to find some income.

Miracle or Tragedy

Today I read a news line from WIS TV in Columbia, SC, (on facebook) reporting that a Mother who was ill with H1N1 (swine flu) had given birth to a healthy baby, and then died.

While it was a sad and tragic story, my mind immediately went to the strength of the story. This young Mother, with God's help I'm sure, was somehow able to live long enough to bring her child into this world, before she allowed this terrible virus to consume her life.

What a victory!

I hope that the child is told of the strength of his/her Mother... the strength that kept her alive long enough to give the world the best gift she could... her child - and what a special child this must be.

Sometimes the greatest miracles are born out of tragedy.

God bless the child!

Things Change

There was once a fellow who was running around town gasping for breath, his eyes bulging out. This went on for a while until he finally decided that he needed to see a doctor. He went to a doctor, who examined him thoroughly. When the doctor finished his examination, he looked at his patient sadly and said, "I really don't know what's wrong with you, but I can tell you that if things continue the way they've been going, you have only two or three months to live."

The man leaves his doctor's office and heads home to do some serious thinking. He decides that if his life is going to be this shortened, he has a whole lot of living to do in the time left. He started spending money like a madman, traveling all over the place trying to squeeze everything he could out of his last weeks on earth.

One day, he entered a clothing shop and told the clerk, "I need fourteen shirts and I need them all with a 14 1/2 inch neck and a 32 inch sleeve." The clerk looked the man over and said, "I think it would be a good idea if we took some measurements." The clerk pulls out a measuring tape and measures the man's sleeve length saying, "Yep, 32 inches looks just right." The clerk then measures the fellow's neck, steps back shaking his head and says, "Mister, if you try to put your 16 1/2 inch neck into a 14 1/2 inch collar, you're going to be running around town, gasping for breath with your eyes bulging out."

This joke was told Sunday morning by Rev. Jimmie Smith... the focus was on health.

The technology heavyweights have all signed up to the Open Book Alliance, which will oppose Google's crusade to make digital copies of as many printed books as possible.

A wide cross-section of libraries, colleges and authors have endorsed Google's book settlement.

Google argues that the settlement will be a boon for consumers, who will have easier access to potentially valuable information now gathering dust in remote library shelves.

And, Google says, authors and publishers will be able to make more money from out-of-print books.

How do you live with critics?

When someone is being critical of you, what quality or virtue do you need to develop to have peace of mind?

Tolerance, forgiveness, or assertiveness for defense?

I think I vote for tolerance, after trying diplomacy to come to a mutual understanding, which failed. Yet, tolerance doesn't really help one deal with the person in question.

Perhaps forgiveness would be the most lofty of choices, but if they continue in their criticisms and attacks, and do not ask for forgiveness, then is it even truly possible to completely forgive someone? How can you forgive an on-going attack? Shouldn't it end before you forgive? Is is even possible to continue forgiveness perpetually while in the process of being attacked?

Assertiveness to defend one's self is the most obvious answer for me, but the defense is really useless. Why should you have to defend yourself for your personal views, or for something you did not do?

Yes, the faithful can have peace in their hearts... that is not in question.

Back in the writer's saddle

What is it that makes some of us bloggers, especially myself, take a month or two off now and again? It isn't something I plan to do, but it inevitably happens a couple of times a year.

Perhaps it's because I go through periods of time when I would do more ranting and venting than is really necessary, and I worry about offending my readers, or saying something that I might regret in hindsight.

Sometimes it's just because my part-time job is wearing me down and I am so tired that I don't have the will to write... (even though my doc says I shouldn't work, the dear folks at the SS office feel differently, and so I do what I can).

Sometimes it's because of the financial stress which takes over my mind and my life... living a month away from homelessness on a month to month basis can wear you down quickly.

Whatever it is, I am now back with a clear mind, or at least a clearer mind than I have had the past two months.

Writing is good therapy, so I'm throwing away my inhibitions and humiliation over my situation... wish me luck!

Global Warming - Majority of Scientists agree

Doran and Kendall Zimmerman conclude that "the debate on the authenticity of global warming and the role played by human activity is largely nonexistent among those who understand the nuances and scientific basis of long-term climate processes." The challenge now, they write, is how to effectively communicate this to policy makers and to a public that continues to mistakenly perceive debate among scientists.

At least 70 skeptical scientists are meeting in New York City this week to dispute that humans are contributing to global warming. Wow, 70 of them. No doubt, conservatives will rally to sing their praises, pretending that they have a large consensus among scientists, which they do not.

Total attendance at the event, sponsored by the Heartland Institute, is expected to be around 800, but as you can see (via the links below), very few of them are experts in the field.

Meanwhile, a recent survey of over 3,000 earth scientists shows that 82 percent of them believe that human activity has been a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures.

Hmmm, that's way more than 70, right?

Yesterday I just couldn't believe what I was hearing from Republicans... they were claiming to be cooperating when it was perfectly obvious to the majority of Americans that they were simply playing bipartisan politics as usual.

The stimulus package - money for Education would not create new jobs?

Hmmm, maybe not. What about saving jobs, isn't that equally important?

In our school district, up to 100 positions will be cut for the next school year. I already know of one teacher who will be losing her position without further funding. She is not losing her position based on merit either, these layoffs are being based on seniority.

State aid - cannot be overseen properly? wouldn't create new jobs?

This statement I find particularly funny in light of the lack of oversight on the stimulus package passed during President Bush's last days in office.

I don't know about where you live, but in this town, people show up in droves for our city and council county meetings, voicing their concerns. Our meetings are also aired on the local information channel in case we can't attend the meeting.

We, the people, we will keep up with how the money is spent in our own neighborhoods.

Again, this aide will help KEEP existing jobs for bridge and road maintenance, among other things.

Get real Senators in Washington, D.C. It's time to apply a little logic to your decisions and start doing what is best for the country, not what is best for your party.

Have the guts to vote your conscience, not your party.

This package will not solve our problems, nothing will. It is just a band-aid, but since that is all that we have access to at the moment, let's at least ease the pain and suffering a tad by using the band-aid.

Plumbing woes - Help!

Plumbing woes... what makes the toilet NOT fill up with water in the back, so that it can flush?

Since last night, we have been having this problem and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. The water just barely drips into the back part where the water is stored. It takes hours for it to fill, and even then it will not deliver a full forced flush. Everything looks fine - no kinks in the chain, etc., but then again, I do not truly know how things should look.

Everything else is draining fine, well, the tub is a little slower than usual, but that's all.

If the problem were a clogged line, then the toilet would run over, correct?

Any possible solutions would be welcomed as I do not have the money for a plumber.

The Celibate Life of Ants

Could this be another life lesson from the ants?

The queen ant is the only ant allowed to reproduce. The others are forced to remain celibate and work for the good of all.

All ants that are caught in the act, or even thinking about the act, are attacked by the other ants.

It's true!

Apparently, an ant that is feeling romantic emits an odor that is easily detectable by the other ants. The scientists that conducted this experiment actually dabbed a bit of the aroma on some unsuspecting ants and then placed them back inside the colony, and they were attacked.

The only time the ant colony experiences "free love" is when the queen ant dies.

"The idea that social harmony is dependent on strict systems to prevent and punish cheating seems to apply to most successful societies," Liebig explained in a comment released with his paper. Regardless of the genome, in matters of sex, nature still appears to prefer us not to stray.

Missing the Farm

Have you ever dreamed of the country life? You know, a farm, lots of land, chickens, goats, etc. It's a nice life. I lived it for about five years.

Sometimes I miss the farm.

One of the cool and sometimes not so cool, things about living miles away from town, was that we always had a new supply of pets. People just love to dump their unwanted pets on country roads. We usually found homes for most of the dogs, but we kept almost all of the cats. We already had three dogs, so keeping more just wasn't practical.

I had about two dozen cats and kittens at one point, all of whom came running to walk with me down the lane to the mailbox every day. It was such fun. We built a large deck out back and they all ate happily... their own private picnic... as if the deck was built just for them.

I am rambling on about this because I read a post over at "Life On a Southern Farm" which brought back all the memories. It's a wonderful post, complete with photos of the hatching chicks, the sick cow, and... well just go see. It's a great read.

As I was reading more material concerning the law of attraction, ho'oponopono and other inspirational modalities of healing and prospering, I couldn't help but think of the words of Leonard Nimoy's character, Mr. Spock, on Star Trek... "Live long and prosper."

Then suddenly I had my own little rhyme. I rather like it, and I can remember it easily. It helps put perspective not only on how we should handle prosperity, but also on how we should handle those not-so-great, stressful periods of life.

Flow through prosperity
and it will flow through you.

and it will be subdued.

US to End in 2010

No, I'm not joking - at least not about the prediction.

A respected (in Russia anyway) Russian professor has made this dire prediction for the US.

This is not a new prediction by this Russian professor, but it certainly is his craziest. Still, the Russians are broadcasting this potential demise of the US twice a day. I guess they conveniently overlooked that even the good psychic professor only gives this demise a 45-55% chance.

My laughter came to an abrupt halt and was replaced by a terribly unsettled feeling when I saw this statement...

"...dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry's academy for future diplomats."

Yikes! This bozo is manipulating the minds of future foreign diplomats?

For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart in 2010. For most of that time, he admits, few took his argument -- that an economic and moral collapse will trigger a civil war and the eventual breakup of the U.S. -- very seriously. There are currently 23 scientific studies which show that we can help each other attract what we want. Can it be true?

I believe it can be true. I believe it is within our power to come together and help each other attract miracles. I know Christians believe in this, but many other faiths have had similar experiences also.

Over the last 50 years independently verified studies have shown that small groups of people holding the same intentions (thoughts, prayers, wishes, etc.) have lowered crime, ended wars and improved the economy in their area.

Learning from the ants

I love ants, just not in my home. They need to understand that they have altered my universe by intruding on my sacred space and that will not be tolerated.

This has been going on for a couple of weeks now, and so I am trying to learn SOMETHING from this.

Surely there is a life lesson in there somewhere!

Four or five little scout ants appear every day in and around the bathroom sink, apparently to scout the area and see if there is any food available.

Persistance - that's an okay lesson. So what if things didn't work out yesterday, let's try the same thing again today. You can't give up - Never give up.

But what about the lesson the ants aren't learning?

Haven't they noticed that their scouts never return?

Why do they keep sending more ants out to the same place when that place is their graveyard?

So, maybe my lesson is to learn that you can't find food in a desert, or you can't drink from an empty well.

Or... sometimes it's just time to move on, leave your comfort zone, and seek a more fertile environment.

Now THAT's a good lesson.

Now I just need to figure out which aspect of my life needs to be left behind.

How Much do Bailout Beggars Make?

Lee Iacocca cut his salary to $1 a year when Chrysler was in trouble.

The following statistics are for CEOs for the year 2007 as posted in April of 2007... view these statistics and more on the nation's top earners at WSJ

GM: Rick Wagoner's $1,283,333 salary + perks : $10.19 million

Ford: Alan Mulally's $666,667 salary + perks : $28.18 million

Wachovia: G. Kennedy Thompson's $1 million salary + perks : 23.85 million

Why would we want to bail out these people?

Thank God the senate didn't pass the automaker bailout. Unfortunately, President Bush has indicated that he could tap into the initial $700 billion bailout and help them anyway. See NPR for more info.

The defeat of the $14 billion bill by a 52-35 procedural vote late Thursday prompted lawmakers in both parties to call for the White House to tap into the $700 billion Wall Street bailout to help General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, which have said they could run out of cash within weeks.

Let's face it, when they start pinching pennies, they obviously aren't pinching their pennies, their pinching the salaries of employees.

I realize the devastation NOT bailing out the auto manufacturers could cause across the country, but I don't see how bailing them out will help.

People cannot afford new cars.

People who can afford to buy a new car apparently aren't very interested in the vehicles that are being produced by these particular auto makers.

White House officials and President-elect Barack Obama have said the weak economy cannot afford the collapse of the auto industry.

Obama said Thursday that an industry shutdown would have a "devastating ripple effect" on the already battered economy.

Detroit's Big Three employ nearly 250,000 workers, with more than 730,000 others producing materials and parts for cars.

The typical every day blogger usually doesn't think about such things when posting, but after some contemplation, it is the opinion of this humble blogger, that taking such things as verbs into consideration could certainly help to improve an article's impact.

Another inspiring factor to consider is the actual challenge of writing without using a state-of-being verb. This process is considerably more difficult than one might think.

Creativity and challenges give many bloggers the motivation to write when the daily grind saps all inspiration from the mind. Such is the case on this day.

Birth Certificate Not Fake

According to the AP the Supreme Court has refused to review the legitimacy of Obama's birth in the US. I just wonder why it took so long to get this issue off the map.

The state of Hawaii previously concluded that there is no doubt that Obama was born there. A birth announcement has even been found in the Honolulu Advertiser.

The birth certificate is not a fake.

The nonpartisan Web site Factcheck.org examined the original document and said it does have a raised seal and the usual evidence of a genuine document.

Gotta buy a laptop

My daughter is graduating high school this year and even though I am hoping that she will remain at home and go to college within driving distance, I am still planning to give her a laptop as a Christmas/birthday/graduation gift. Even if she remains at home, it will be a huge benefit for both of us to have computer time whenever we want. My old laptop just doesn't work well with all of the new flash features and interactive sites such as facebook and myspace which are sites I don't believe she could live without.

Recently I came across a site that offers reviews of several different brands of laptops and even helps you determine which features you need depending on who will be using the laptop and for what purpose. Top picks are also listed as determined by C-Net, PC Magazine and About.com.

Apparently, the overall best laptop across all categories is the Lenovo ThinkPad X300. This one looks great and I would love to have it, but it is a little more than I wanted to spend right now.

The Sony Vaio AR seemes to be the best buy for us partly because it has Bluetooth and a webcam built into the system, and it comes with Vista Home Premium installed.

How do you use Facebook?

I love facebook for keeping up with my family and out-of-town friends and my church group, some of children's friends, and I've been able to connect with many friends from my past.

A couple of days ago, I added the "Facebook Me" link at the top of my blog. But now, I'm wondering, should I really use facebook to "connect" with fellow bloggers and blog readers?

Since facebook constantly shows what is being "written" on walls of your friends, will having a group of people not associated with your actual family and close friends infringe on their privacy, or maybe become an aggravation?

I am able to see what other facebook "friends" (who are not on my list of facebook friends) write on MY friends' walls, and so I just can't figure out how having a large group would be a good thing.

Especially if every time one of my friends writes on my wall, every friend on my list will see it.

Are you using facebook?

If so, is it just for your family and close friends, or have you extended it to include blog readers and internet friends?

I would love to know how some of you are using facebook.

Laid Off Chicago Workers Occupy Plant

The laid-off workers hoisted placards saying,

"Bank of America:
You got bailed out. We got sold out."

I saw this story on one of the cable news networks, but could only find it online at Reuters.

The TV version had a brief interview with one of the workers who was asking people to take their business away from Bank of America. They feel that BOA is not properly managing business considering their recent bailout and that they should have continued to extend credit to their employer, Republic Windows & Doors.

I agree.

The story goes on to say that the window company has known for weeks that they would close, but didn't inform employees until last Tuesday, that last Friday would be their last day.

By law, they should have given them 60 days notice, but how is such a law enforced? If there's no money, then you close, law or no law.

Unfortunately, they are losing benefits including vacation pay which has already been earned - by merit, at least.

The company blamed BOA's cancellation of their credit line for the closing.

By all accounts, the employees are still occupying the closed plant.

The parties involved were expected to meet today to discuss the problem.

Activism is still alive and well in the US.

Tiptoe into senililty

My 91 year old aunt was at our Christmas family gathering yesterday. She was frail and couldn't walk, and sometimes forgot who we were or that we had already said hello, but otherwise she was spry and in good humor.

As we were talking, she took part in the conversation by stating that her Grandmother was 100 years old. Naturally, we thought she was "lost" somewhere in time, and we didn't think we had an ancestor that lived that long, so there were multiple voices of "Oh really?" and "Wow!" and "How about that!"

Then silence.

A few seconds passed and suddenly Aunt Ola spoke up and said "I was lying."

OMG, the room roared with laughter!!

It's such a paradox dealing with the elderly who have tiptoed into senility but don't always stay there. You never know if they are serious or if they are actually trying to make you laugh.

My Father was the same way. He had Alzheimer's and he had such a good sense of humor. I remember many times he had to tell us he was joking and we were relieved, but also sad because he had to tell us he was joking.

God bless them all!

Ice cream - I ate it every night with my Dad.

It was one of the few things we did together.

My daughter hardly knew him, and the few years she had with him were riddled by Alzheimers.

She is 17 now, and we rarely miss a night of ice cream.

We only have a bowl though, not a whole pint or anything.

My Father liked his ice cream with fruit and/or nuts. I didn't, I only wanted chocolate or vanilla. But that has changed over the years and now I enjoy my ice cream in a "few" flavors.

My favorite is Banana Split, folowed closely by vanilla with caramel and almonds. My favorite standby is fudge royal or an ice cream sundae.

I just can't seem to give it up, even though I have known for some time that it is an emotional bond to my Father.

It's my comfort food and

eating it is my comfort time when I am at home

in my comfort zone.

Colors and their meanings

Found a really interesting story about colors of the year over at The Artist's Muse: "What Color is the Coming Year?"

It's definitely worth the read...

Included in the story was a "synopsis of the meanings ascribed to the colors often used in Christian religious icons" which I have included below for future reference... I think it's interesting to know what the colors might mean to others, especially our favorite color.

* Gold symbolizes divine light.

* Blues are associated with heaven, mystery and the mystical life.

* Red is linked with heat, passion, love, beauty, life.

* Orange-red, associated with fire, suggests fervor and spiritual purification.

* Purple & crimson are associated with royalty and the divine. It is the symbol of supreme power.

* White is associated with the divine world, purity, innocence, and is sometimes used with what Orthodoxy calls "the uncreated light."

* Green represents the earth's vegetation, fertility, youth, hope and freshness, and martyrdom.

• Brown is affiliated with poverty, humility, bare earth, dust, inert matter and all that is transient and perishable.

As you might have guessed, my favorite color is red.

Well, I don't know either, but personally, I do believe that the PRODUCER was present. I call him God.

As it is with any producer or director, it is up to them how much or how little they actually do with their production. They might micromanage it from beginning to end, or they might set the stage, give some preferences, and then let the project develop on its own. Either way, they should still get credit for the implementation and completion of the project.

Scientists have again modified their opinion of the formation and habitation of an early earth. I find it comforting to know that they actually do update the public whenever they uncover new information or have new theories.

Whatever happened to tolerance?

According to most teens, anything they aren't interested in is "lame."

That's the consensus at least among the ones that feel they absolutely must post on every topic under the sun.

How can we ever expect to have true tolerance of other races, religions and cultures if our youth have no tolerance of another person's interests? Why do they feel the need to "put down" and mock other people who have different hobbies, interests, etc?

While I don't believe we need to go all the way back to the times when children were meant to be seen and not heard, I do think a happy medium is long overdue.

Actually, I know a few adults who have the same problem. Their hobbies are outright ridiculous to me, but I never say anything like "grow up already," which is what I'm thinking.

Yet they have no problem expressing the "lameness" of other people's hobbies, even being so rude as to laugh at people who are interested in things they don't understand.

Yep, we are certainly lacking tolerance - and wisdom - among all age groups.

Steve Foss on Obama

Steve Foss, prophet of God?

Never heard of Steve Foss until this week, when I stumbled upon a few blogs who have posted his prophecy regarding Obama, which was apparently "known" to him in the year 2000, but just recently sent via email to a select few who have wasted no time spreading the news.

The problem with prophets is that they can sometimes get their own "feelings" woven into the prophecy. Also, just as in the days of Jonah, a prophet's vision will NOT come true if certain actions are taken. Today, too many people judge a prophet based on the actual outcome when actually, that should not be the case. But that's another topic altogether.

I do NOT take the prophecy of Steve Foss literally.

One of the things he stated is that Obama would win the election, and that Obama would be an ungodly president. Hogwash.

I have NEVER heard a prophet (of God) condemn anyone by name. The whole idea is very disturbing to me.

My feeling is that Foss possibly "wanted" to believe that Obama would be ungodly when possibly the vision indicated ungodliness in Washington, DC. None of us would be wrong to say that there is at least some ungodliness among our representatives in Washington.

It is also possible that the "ungodliness" had to do with us as a nation, or with future events that may come upon us on our own soil.

As you can see, there are many possible outcomes to a prophetic vision. Unfortunately, the one prophesying doesn't always understand the complexity of the possibilities.

I do not believe that God told Foss that Obama is ungodly. Period.

Meanwhile, fear mongering is still affecting the religious right, which keeps us from moving forward.

Bible 101: The opposite of fear is love. Love dispels all darkness and all fear. Now this love that can dispel fear and darkness is a deep love, a true love, and a righteous love.

What our nation needs now is just that - a righteous love for all of our American brothers and sisters, especially those in office.

Lesson learned?

Don't believe someone totally and whole-heartedly based solely on their claim to be a Christian. Take it with a grain of salt and wait for the outcome.

Twilight Movie Review

I feel a little sad for the teenaged girls who have read the book Twilight into the wee hours of the morning and anxiously anticipated the movie - which they loved for the most part - and are now hearing the negative reviews the movie has received from so-called experts.

I feel sorry for them because many of the movie reviewers have dismissed the movie as successful only for young girls.

What's wrong with that?

The movie nor the book was ever targeted to adults. It was written specifically for teenagers, so let's allow the girls to enjoy their flick without all the sarcasm.

All movies are not for all people, nor should they be.

I'm glad to see a well written book turned into a movie for teens.

The love of reading and the anticipation of watching the movie afterwards are excellent motivations to encourage more reading among our youth.

I remember that wonderful excited feeling of watching Jane Eyre and Little Women after reading the books when I was young. Sadly, those movies are too corny for most young girls today. Let's just be thankful that Stephenie Meyer has addressed this market with some of the old-fashioned class and dignity of high schoolers left in tact.

I read the book because my daughter wanted to read it and since it was about vampires, in spite of her assurances that it was okay to read, I read it first to make sure. I highly recommend the book as a unique love story with a touch of vampirism. Some Moms might like it too, I did.

I found it to be delightfully good reading without sex and with very little violence. There is always a fight of good over evil in any good story, so a touch of violence is sometimes unavoidable. It deals with high school romance that can take all of us back to high school - before everyone had sex with everybody.

Synopsis:

The lead female character has divorced parents and is off to live with her Father in another state. The new high school has people she has never seen or heard of before, vampires. Of course, she doesn't know this when she falls head over heels for the lead male character who is "half" human and half vampire. However, he doesn't attack humans. There are good vampires in conflict with bad vampires who threaten the female lead character. Naturally, he protects her and so we have a thrilling tale of survival and forbidden love.

Burned out on blogging, or politics?

Burned out on blogging, or just burned out on politics?

You probably haven't noticed but I didn't post for over a month.

Matter of fact, I didn't even spend much time reading other blogs.

Why? That is the question I've been pondering.

I would think about logging in, but when I went over to the computer I ended up logging into facebook and checking out my family and friends. I love facebook. It's light hearted banter between family and friends for the most part, with the occasional somewhat "urgent" message written on the wall.

Then there are the games. Sometimes I just sat for a couple of hours playing online games by myself. It became my "therapy" for NOT dealing with issues I have no control over.

I think I just got burned out on the hoopla of the Republicans over Obama's win. Honestly, I am quite proud to live in this nation which elected an extremely intelligent man to the presidency. I am also quite proud that the color of his skin did not deter the voters of different colors.

During such troubling times, I believe that most Americans have placed their hope in a man who is certainly determined to deliver. Only time will tell.

Meanwhile, the air seems to be a little lighter since the election (unless you are amidst a Republican dominated group).

People have hope again. It's been a long time coming.

I, for one, will pray for Obama. I will regard him with the dignity, respect and admiration that ANY person in the Presidency deserves.

Palin may focus on Alaska for now

CNN reports that Palin's spokesman, Bill McAllister, has received multiple (to say the least) offers and requests for appearances and interviews with Sarah Palin.

However, the people of Alaska seem to want her to focus on them right now.

Actually, it's probably in "good taste" that she wait until after Obama officially takes office before she is seen nationally.

I, for one, can't wait to see how she will handle the media blitz. Wonder how the Oprah interview will go? We'll have to wait and see.

Woman awarded 10.7 Million

New York City or more specifically, a hospital in Queens, neglected a woman for two hours during which time she lapsed into a coma and is now partially paralyzed. It seems she was waiting for a brain scan to check for bleeding in her brain.

The lady is now 71 years old, not that it matters. It wouldn't matter what age she is or was, what matters is that she was harmed due to negligence and should be compensated for her misery.

I am the first to admit and even rant about the lack of patient care in this country, but let's get real. Who in the world needs 10.7 million dollars?

There is apparently no sense of logic or common sense among our people.

What were these jurors thinking?

God help us.

Postpone the debate

Both presidential candidates should be in Washington doing their "current" job.

I've been wondering all week when they were going to step up to the plate. McCain is finally stepping up.

I can't fault Obama though. Obviously he has no pull or clout in the Senate, so why waste his time just being in attendance?

McCain, on the other hand, is and has been vital to getting things done and bringing important issues to the table. His input is crucial during this critical time.

IMO, it shows a severe lack of logic and common sense to say that McCain is avoiding the debate by "running away" to Washington. He works there and there is a crisis.

The debate is just being postponed.

How is that avoiding the debate?

McCain has never been one to run from anything.

CNN and other networks insinuating otherwise are just being outrageously ridiculous.

What happened to true journalism? You know, the kind of journalism where they just give the facts without adding their political slant to the picture. I miss it.

Leaning towards McCain

The Independent voter (me) is leaning towards the McCain Palin ticket for many reasons, TRUST, CHARACTER and INTEGRITY being among the top criteria.

As for experience, who, really tell me who, is ever experienced enough to be President?

Experience is not on my list of criteria. Was George Washington experienced? Yes, I know he was a General, but that is not experience in leading a country. There is literally no job on earth that can qualify as proper "experience" for being the President of the US.

McCain, however, has the experience by most standards. More importantly, to me at least, is that he has a history of public service that cannot be equalled by anyone who has thrown their hat into the ring of campaigning for President.

While I am still torn and saddened by the lack of concern by many Republicans for the "least" of our citizenry, and indeed, the rhetoric of some who would like to see an end to welfare programs, I am still inclined to vote for McCain / Palin.

I have supported McCain in the past, but until he chose Palin, I thought he would not be able to usher in the changes that he has fought for these many years.

Above all, I would like to see honesty and concern for ALL citizens become the governing factor that directs our folks in Washington.

McCain and Palin are our best chance for restoring honesty and integrity in Washington (IMHO).

FDA Publishes Problem Drugs on Web

As of yesterday, September 5th, the FDA has finally posted a page at their website listing the top 20 potentially harmful drugs in compliance with a bill passed by Congress last year forcing them to report potentially unsafe drugs to consumers.

Problem is, the percentages of people affected are not listed. So you don't know how many people have reported a problem compared to how many people have taken the medicine without incident. The most the list can do for you is alert you to ask your doctor (or pharmacist) for further information if you see your medication on the list.

The list covers reports gathered during January, February, and March of 2008. I find it disturbing that it took a full 4 months after the end of the quarter for this report to get published.

Hmmm, let's see, the government requires quarterly payroll reports to be compiled and submitted by the end of the following month. Our state requires monthly sales tax reports to be filed and submitted by the 20th of the following month.

I guess the government can take their time reporting to us because we have no method of holding them accountable, or do we? YES. It's called ELECTION DAY.

Anyway, I digress - back to this list....

The list includes the name of the drug and the problems that have been reported.

"My message to patients is this: Don't stop taking your medicine," said Dr. Janet Woodcock, who heads the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "If your doctor has prescribed a drug that appears on this list, you should continue taking it unless your doctor advises you differently."

Seems like the FDA is doing the least it can get away with to comply with the new rules.

The screaming Savage

Michael Savage is certainly named appropriately - he is a savage sometimes. I don't know why in the world I listened to him at all the other night, even though I only tolerated about 10 minutes of his screaming nonsense before I turned him off.

He actually had the nerve to say that Obama was a marxist and would take our private homes from us if he became president. All of this because Obama took a (well-deserved) jab at McCain for not knowing how many houses he owned.

This whole house thing is so out of control. Who cares how many houses McCain owns? But, shouldn't he "know" how many houses he owns?

I don't care about his "investment" properties, although I must admit I would be curious to know how many homes, second homes and vacation homes he has access to at any time - to actually live in without evicting someone.

It seems that the radical right wing can't find enough points to argue against an Obama presidency, so they are grabbing at anything, taking pot shots, and employing scare tactics to frighten their disciples, um, I mean listeners.

I have plenty of problems with some democrats too, and ALL people who scream.

I believe in moderation, communication, bipartisanship, cooperation, and common sense.

I've finally taken the plunge and decided to participate. It's fun and it forces me to be creative which is good for the mind. I used to write poetry quite often, but lately it seems I'm too busy. Maybe this little game will get my creative juices flowing again.

Political fund-raisers calling

My state doesn't require a registered voter to register with a party, so I should not be on a phone calling list for any political party.

And yet I am.

I have received Republican fund-raiser calls for years so that's no surprise.

But today, I received my first Democratic fund-raising phone call and I am not happy about it.

First of all, even after I told him I couldn't afford to give any money, he proceeded with his script. I interrupted him to inform him that I was one of those people who had to borrow from family members just to keep my utilities on. Then he politely ended the call.

How do I get on these lists???!!!???

I don't think political parties should be allowed to invade the privacy of a person's home by calling and asking for money. Those who want to donate will find a way to donate.

Besides, if you catch me home in the middle of the day, what does that say about me?

1. Either I'm rich and don't have to work so maybe you can get some money out of me.

2. I don't have a job and therefore I don't have extra cash laying around to support the cause of a political party.

More often than not, I believe option 2 will be the main reason you catch someone at home in the middle of the day.

Personally, I think they ought to have to donate a portion of their funds raised to a charity that takes care of the homeless and the sick.

Population Explosion

The population in America should increase by over 130 million people in less than 45 years according to the census bureau.

Not trying to sound cynical here, or pro-abortion, but I can't help but wonder how abortion is playing into the big picture of those who are possibly very subtly trying to control the population without drawing any attention.

You know who I'm talking about: the unseen, faceless, nameless people of the "powers that be."

Other interesting projections show that white (non-hispanic) people will only make up 46%, which means that the minority peoples, at least when grouped together, will make up the majority of the population in 2050, with the largest growing Hispanic group at the top with 30%.

This might be the first time in our short history that minority peoples in total, are higher in numbers than the majority.

Assuming this projection is accurate, we will probably be a bilingual country by then, regardless of the attempts by some today to make everyone learn English. (By the way, the language thing is not an issue with me. I see more important issues that need tending to.)

The most disturbing projection economically speaking, is that the population of those over 85 is expected to triple to 19 million people. Since we barely take care of the elderly now, what do you suppose their living conditions will be like in 2050? It's scary!

The U.S. has nearly 305 million people today. The population is projected to hit 400 million in 2039 and 439 million in 2050.

That's like adding all the people from France and Britain, said Steve A. Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington group that advocates tighter immigration policies.

One of my favorite movies is Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home. Yes, I'm a huge fan of the original series, with Bill Shatner as Captain Kirk.

I was watching CNN yesterday as they were covering the story of John Edwards' affair.

I was appalled - literally - at the number of callers, mostly female, who thought the media coverage wasn't fair and that this matter should be kept "private" for his family's sake.

Sorry ladies, but protecting his family was Dear John's job, and he not only failed, he is the only reason they are being humiliated. I feel sorry for them, but the truth has to be told.

These ladies apparently have the attitude that "boys will be boys," but that old adage should never apply to the MEN, not boys, who lend themselves to public service.

Since when do we consider leaders of the nation as little boys who can't help but misbehave and cheat on their wives?

This is not about religion - it is about accountability, integrity, morality, trust and decency.

This was the ultimate act of betrayal, made even more disgusting because of the poor health of his wife who needed his support more than ever.

If men can't stand loyal and true by their wives, the Mother of their children, when the wife needs them the most, then how can they be expected to be loyal and true to the core values of America?

His character is sorely lacking as is his self-control and moral compass.

It is time for us to demand a standard of morals and decency from those who would represent us in Congress, in the Senate, and certainly in the White House.

Once Dear John became a "public servant" and then proceeded to break his marriage vows and bring shame to his family, his behavior became fair game for the media.

Demand action on healthcare

Do you have health insurance?

Many do not. It is my opinion that a citizen of America should be able to go to a doctor and receive medical care when they are ill.

I am not as concerned about any other issue facing us today, as I am about the suffering of our sick and elderly citizens who have no hope of living in fair health.

Dear Senator McCain and Senator Obama, Nearly 50 million Americans have no health insurance at all, while the middle class is getting squeezed by skyrocketing health care costs. Meanwhile, insurance companies will only cover the healthiest among us, denying people with pre-existing conditions the coverage they need. We urge you to lead the charge for quality, affordable health care for all Americans, including those with pre-existing conditions.

Candidate offers cheap gas

Nick Leibham may have found the way to a voter's heart, offering 50 people gas for $1.27 per gallon.

I know it's only 50 people, but other voters will appreciate the gesture also because it shows that he truly knows the hardship that many people are facing.

Wouldn't it be nice if more of our political candidates spent some of that campaign money on voters instead of TV time?

CANDIDATE OFFERS CHEAP GAS would certainly get my attention.

Nick's a smart man, or at least he is smart enough to have hired a smart person to help him campaign.

Nick also found another way to subtly grab people's attention by not telling you up front which party he is with. When you visit his website, you have to make a couple of clicks to determine his party affiliation. Meanwhile, you're learning more about Nick, which appears to be all good. He has been a school teacher, a congressional aide, a prosecutor and now a practicing attorney in San Diego.

I'm not in California, but even if Nick isn't able to win this election, I believe he is someone we will hear more from in the future.

Ever have one of those days when there are so many things rattling around in your head that you can't seem to focus enough to write about just one?

Instead of torturing myself today, I decided to alert everyone to a few good blog posts I've read while browsing with Entrecard... (links will open in a new window or tab).

First, a bit of humor written earlier in the week at Mankey Fables and Tales. If you've never read this blog you're in for a real treat. This particular post covers the nightmare men have to go through sometimes and it is hysterical. Don't worry, it's written in good taste, considering the topic.

Politi-Gal has written an informative piece on our current oil situation, showing that oil is not overly in demand and backing it up with references. Excellent job.

I Will Not Die has posted an interesting article as to Why Smart People Fail.

Bloggers are great, especially Entrecard bloggers. I have found so much information that is helping my blogging efforts.
